Chana Dal Kabab Recipe – step by step presentation of easy and famous Indian starter dish chana dal kabab or shammi kabab’s vegetarian version. This chana dal cutlet is a perfect starter for parties or family get together.
I had learned this Chana Dal Kabab recipe from one of my Hyderabadi friend. Once she invited me at her home and her mother had served this mouth -watering dish to me. I instantly asked her the recipe and thanks to Mrs Khan for sharing this lovely recipe with me. I was making these kababs with lots of variations since last 5 years. My Chana Dal Kababs are a big hit among my family and friends.
I have tasted the non veg Shammi kabab too, the famous Indian snack which basically belongs to Awadh. It’s originally a non vegetarian dish made of mince meat, lentils and different spices.
If, you are pure vegetarian than Chana Dal Kabab are one of the best kabab options for you. Shallow fried chana dal kabab are so delicious. 3/4th of coarse grind and 1/4th of raw lentil give a smooth and crunchy texture in the mouth. The process is quite simple, but slightly time taking due to soaking of lentil.
You can even try – aloo tikki, aloo matar tikki
The below mentioned measures is enough for making 8 kabab and it will take approx 20 minutes cooking time.
Ingredients of making Chana Dal Kabab Recipe
Split Bengal Gram (Chana Dal) – 1 cup
Onion – 1 medium size
Red chilli powder – ½ tea spoon
Dry Mango Powder – 1 Tea Spoon
Garam Masala – ½ Tea Spoon
Coriander Powder – ½ Tea Spoon
Dry mint – ½ Tea Spoon (Crushed)
Oil – for frying
Salt – according to taste
Chickpea flour / gram flour (Besan) – 2 Table Spoon
Ginger (grated) – ½ tea spoon
Basic preparation of making Chana Dal Kabab Recipe
- Soak chana dal in water for over night or at least 3 – 4 hours.
- Drain all the water and coarsely grind ¾ of the dal quantity (without adding water) and keep the rest of the soaked lentil aside.
- Bring chana dal paste in a plate and mix all the ingredients except oil and besan.
Method of making Chana Dal Kabab Recipe
Step 1: Now add gram flour and mix well using your hands.
Step 2: Now divide the mixture into equal size of 8 parts. Moist your hands with water and hold a portion of the mixture and give a ball shape and then flatten slightly by pressing on top. Make the entire kabab disk same way.
Step 3: Now heat sufficient oil for shallow frying and when oil is ready for frying slide 3 – 4 kabab into oil. Fry on medium gas flame from both the sides until turns golden brown.
Step 4: Now strain the oil from kababs and bring it out on an absorbent paper / tissue paper or removing extra oil.
Chana Dal Kabab is ready to serve, enjoy it hot with your favorite flavor of chutney. You can even enjoy Chana Dal Kabab with your bread slices as a chana dal cutlet stuffed sandwich.
Few useful tips for Chana Dal Kabab Recipe
- If you forget to soak your chana dal don’t worry at all. Soak in hot water for 15 minutes and then give a whistle cook.
- I have used dried crushed mint leaves as fresh mint leaves were not available by this time. You can use fresh leaves too, but trust me dried mint gives more flavors to the dish.
- I have used sunflower refined oil for frying the kabab.
