Moong Dal halwa is very popular sweet dessert that serves in most of the marriages (even mine too) in North India. My mother cooks it so yummy that I can’t resist from eating more and more. Today I am presenting you my mother’s special and simple Moong Dal pudding / halwa Recipe.
I prefer cooking this Moong Dal Halwa in winters for so many reasons. First, it takes too much time in front of gas and the hand movement is required a lot. So I think winters only can afford Moong Dal pudding. The delicious taste of moongdal Halwa recipe is worth taking the pain.

Ingredients for making Moong Dal Halwa Recipe
Moong Dal – 1 cup
Sugar – 1 cup
Milk – 1 ½ cup
Water – 1 ½ cup
Ghee – ¾ cup
Cardamom powder – ¼ Tea Spoon
Prep Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour, 50 minutes
Yield: 4 -5 serving
Basic preparation of Moong Dal Halwa Recipe
- Wash Moong dal and soak in fresh water for approx 2 hours.
- Drain all the water and make a smooth paste of dal.
Method of making Moong Dal Halwa Recipe
Step 1: Heat ghee in a heavy base pan. Keep the gas on simmer mode.
Step 2: Add Moong dal paste in the pan and stir continuously. Initially Moong dal will stick to pan, but gradually it will become less sticky to pan.
Step 3: Keep stirring, you will notice that dal has changed its texture and colour a bit after 10 minutes. Now add chopped almonds.
Step 4: Meanwhile, in a different pan, heat milk, water, cardamom powder and sugar. Cook to a boil come and sugar gets dissolved properly.
Step 6: When fried dal converts to granulated texture and the frying process will take approx 20 minutes on simmer gas flame.
Step 7: Now add milk mixture and stir properly. This process needs a little extra care otherwise mixture can turn to lumps. Now cook until mixture starts leaving the pan. The process will take approx 15 minutes of time.
Turn the gas off. Tempting, mouth watering Moong Dal Halwa is ready to serve. Garnish Halwa with chopped almond and cashew nuts. You can store Moong Dal Halwa in an airtight container in the fridge for a week’s time.
