Masoor dal is a bit milder after cooking if compared to arhar dal. Masoor dal is basically pink in color and after cooking, it converts into yellow color. Masoor Dal Sambar is almost the same as the regular tuvar dal sambar / arhar dal sambar recipe. I have used potato, bottle gourd, lady finger, ridge gourd, beans, onion and tomato for malka dal sambar recipe.
Ingredients of Masoor dal Sambar recipe
Red Lentil (Masoor Dal) – ½ cup
Potato (Aloo) – 2
Lady finger (Bhindi) – 12
Ridge gourd (Turai) – 1
Bottle gourd (Lauki) – ¼ of medium size
Beans (Sem) – 10 stick
Onion (Pyaaz) – 1
Curry leaves (Curry Leaves) – 6
Mustard seed (Saarson Dana) – 1 tea spoon
Turmeric Powder (Haldi Powder) – ½ Tea Spoon
Salt – according to taste
Coriander Powder (Dhaniya Powder) – 1 Table Spoon
Tamarind paste (Emli Paste) – 1 Table Spoon
Asafetida (Hing) – 2 pinch

Basic preparation of Masoor dal Sambar recipe
- Wash masoor dal and soak in water for 20 minutes.
- Cut all the vegetable in big sizes.
Method of Masoor dal Sambar recipe
Step 1: In a pressure cooker take soaked masoor dal and vegetables except onion. Add 2 cups of water, salt and turmeric powder. Pressure cook for two whistles on medium gas flame.
Step 2: In frying pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and asafetida. Now let the mustard seed cracker a bit. Now add chopped onion and sauté well.
Step 3: Add curry leaves and the rest of the spices. Cook until a fine spice aroma starts coming.
Step 4: Transfer the cooked masoor dal with vegetables and stir well. Cook for one minute and then add tamarind paste. Cook to a boil come and then turn the gas off.
Masoor dal Sambar recipe is ready to serve. Enjoy malka dal Sambar with South Indian cuisines or with plain steamed rice.
